A whale of a time

We drove a slightly different route on the way back to Kirknes so that we could drive over the bridge which marked the spot at which Norway is at its narrowest (the distance between the sea and the border being only a couple of kilometres.
The landscape here was pretty unique with lots of old gnarly birch trees which looked like minature Ents, the ancient tree-like guardians of the forests in Lord of the Rings.
Back in Kirkenes, it was not really surprising, given the bleak location of the town, that we struggled to find somewhere open for lunch. Eventually we found a surf'n'turf restaurant which was open. In these parts, surf'n'turf means reindeer and salmon.

Andy however plumped for whale. The first thing to say is that the portion size was huge; clearly there was no scrimping here. The texture for such a large slab of meat was surprisingly light and there was a very plesant after taste remainding you of the sea. Overall, very enjoyable and something, conscientious objections aside, to be ordered again if the opportunity arose.
