Kirkenes

Today it is sunny and 10oCs which is 2o hotter than Kirkenes' average june temperature!

Although the town itself is quite barren and does not have too much going for it, it is still a pretty interesting place:

- It is as far east as both Istanbul and Cairo and as far north as Point Barrow in Alaska;.
- Kirkenes suffered more bomb attacks during the second world war then any other place in Europe bar Malta;
- During the Nazi occupation, teachers who refused to teach the Nazi propoganda were rounded up and sent here for slave labour;
- with the Russian border only a few km's away, all of the road signs are in both Norwegian and Russian;
- and there were Russian ships in the harbour.
