The obligatory history hour

After eating we walked down some wooden steps to have a closer look at the view and stumbled across an opening into the mountain where the entrance had been covered with a black cloth.

It transpired that this was a tunnel the Germans started building during WW2 in their attempt of furthering the railway north from the Arctic Circle. A futile attempt as this tunnel bears witness of. A little sign outside said that the original artefacts inside had been left and there were some tables and chairs.

The Germans never succeeded in building the railway further than the Arctic Circle and after the war it was extended as far as Bodø which remains the end of the Norwegian railway to this day. It’s just too difficult and expensive to extend it further north due to the inhospitable terrain.
