Finding the Midnight Sun - HURRAH!!!

We checked into the Bodø Hotel (pictured) and ate at the harbour.

Since it was a bank holiday weekend, the restaurant we had chosen to eat at had virtually run out of food! We got down to our third choices meals before they were able to serve them. Despite this, and the very long wait for the food, it was a lovely relaxing evening.

We noticed at around 10.30pm, that it was still normal daylight and that the sun was nowhere near setting. We decided to go and try to find the midnight sun, meaning the point at midnight when the sun sets, before rising again.

This is not as simply as just travelling to a point north enough where the sun does not set below the horizon; you need to find a flat horizon following the earth’s natural curvature (i.e. overlooking the ocean) to actually see the midnight sun. Given how much the landscape is dominated by mountains in this part of the world, this is far from straight forward.

We did find it though, taking the road leading to where the ferry to Kjerringøy departs. It was spectacular!
Past midnight there was still daylight. We were very glad that our hotel room had thick curtains!
