Fishermen's Paradise

Leaving Bodø we went back to the spot we’d been at last night to catch the sun at midnight to take the 10 minute ferry journey to Kjerringøy (old missus island). Despite being a glorious sunny day, it was windy and AH had to put some tights on under her skirt before boarding the ferry. She was very glad she’d put them on when she had several Marilyn Monroe incidents on the boat! Suddenly the skirt blew up her back!

Kjerringøy is a stunning spot with tiny white sandy beaches, a lovely archipelago, surrounded by ragged mountains and clear blue water. There was an old trading post here owned by one family who traded with the local fishermen.

The houses were the fishermen slept, some of which are traditional rorbuer (wooden huts on stilts in the water) have been done up and can now be rented for the night. The trading post area with its sandy beach, long wooden pier and grass roofed houses was also used as a film location for the filming of Dina’s Book, a very famous Norwegian novel.

There is also a boat carving shop here where they make Nordlandssnekka, a type of wooden boat which apparently is so beautiful it is almost seductive! We spotted some of them, along with more modern boats down at the harbour, and although very pretty we were not seduced! Maybe we have to be a Norwegian sailor for that to happen!

At the harbour is also were you find the rorbuer, as well as fish hung out to dry on the house walls. We stopped for a quick liquorice ice cream and coffee before heading back to the mainland..

Here are some other pictures from the island:
