Leaving the jewellery shop, we were met with almost tropical temperatures, 14 degrees! We had to return to Karasjok to take our shortcut through Finland.
Back in Karasjok we decided to spend some time at a miniature Sami theme park, Sampi, where we saw some traditional Sami dwellings and a supposed insight into their traditional way of life.
Frankly, it did not add up to much, apart from the film which started out very promisingly, before the sound cut out. Far more interesting was the lunch served at the unusual Stor Gammen restaurant which served Sami-styled meal in a round turf-covered hut in front of an open fire.
Next to Stor Gammen (large Gammen) were a couple of smaller Gammens, very resembling of Hobbit holes, perhaps this is what Tolkien got his inspiration from?
The food was delicious; a medley of elk and reindeer, just the right side of medium-rare.
Then we set out for Suomi Finland, also known in Norway as the land of the 1000 lakes.
Driving through northern Finland, the landscape was slightly more forestry than that of its neighbour, but Rudolph looked exactly the same! This is also bear country and we were on constant bear watch, but unfortunately didn't see any. After around three hours we crossed the border, no, not into Russia, and found ourselves once again back in Norway with only a few kilometres left to Kirkenes, our final destination of this stage of the journey.
By the way, guess who we met in the Stor Gammen? The Danes from Tirpitz! We also met them at Juhl's Galleri and we have suspicions that they might be stalking us! They were so delighted to see us in the restuarant they started taking pictures! They're taking the Hurtigrute as well, so we're sure to bump into them again!
